Tonka Chuck's Garage Deluxe Stunt Playset

Tonka Chuck's Garage Deluxe Stunt Playset is a stunt park with a Tonka Chuck motorised vehicle, made by Hasbro.

Once assembled your child can set Chuck going and watch him do stunts. There is interaction as they have to help him onto the bridge section. They can also direct him where to go by positioning the track to keep him moving.

Presley, 3 and Cash, 2, absolutely loved this toy. I have to admit being a little surprised by this as they normally like to control all the vehicles in the house by 'brumming' them. The both spent hours watching and helping Chuck. The stunts are excellent and I found it mesmerising to watch! There is also a Chuck story book to set the scene.

We weren't keen on the packaging. We had to tear the box to get everything out. This meant that we couldn't then store it in the box. Also, there are sections that once clipped together do not come apart, so you need a large box to keep it in.

Having said that this toy gets the thumbs up from us.

You can see this and other toys in the range in action on YouTube.

Tonka Chuck's Garage Deluxe Stunt Playset is currently available for £34.99 (down from £39.99) at Toys R Us

for Toys R Us Toyologists

We're loving our 'jobs', 'working' as Toys R Us Toyologists. The only time my boys will tidy is if I tell them there is a new toy to test.

Here is a run down of some of the toys we have tested recently.

In the Night Garden PJ Iggle Piggle currently available for £16.99, down from £19.99

If your child loves In the Night Garden, they will love this Iggle Piggle soft toy. He comes complete with pyjamas and slippers and that all-important red blanket (that's attached to his 'hand' by velcro). He also has a light and story book so your little one can tuck Iggle Piggle up in bed and read him a bedtime story.

My boys love this Iggle Piggle and both spent a good while trying to dress and undress him. They also read to him, which is really sweet.

For the last few weeks, however, Iggle Piggle has been *whispers* naked. The clothes on ours were a little tight, this made it almost impossible for two and three year old fingers to manage. They still play with him and take him to bed though, so this hasn't spoilt their enjoyment.

Animal Planet 9" Wild Eyes Dinosaur £19.97

I was going start by saying that this dinosaur is really realistic, but of course I have no idea whether it is or not! Anyway, it is an animatronic dinosaur that moves like you would imagine a dinosaur would move. The vivid blue eyes flash and you can hear jungle sounds.

It is easy to operate, by pressing its foot and the animation lasts quite a while.

The downside is that it is a one-trick pony dinosaur. It only has one operation, but my children still play with it. They call it a crocodile and give it cuddles!

If your child loves dinosaurs they will love this. There are three to collect.

Tomy Aquadoodle Animal Magic Sounds £21.99, down from £26.99

This large Aquadoodle mat comes with one pen (my big bugbear with Aquadoodle products is that when you have two children you need two pens)! The pen fits into a holder that plays the animal sounds of your choice as you draw.

The pen is easy to operate and both of my children could choose which sound they wanted to hear, but they lost interest in this element fairly quickly.

What my boys really love is the drawing on the Aquadoodle mat. This is our second Aquadoodle product so we have two pens. They can both empty their pens and have them re-filled a couple of times a day because they play with it for hours at a time. The mat dries quickly and they love to colour in the animal footprints and pictures over and over again. There is no mess and they haven't been able to open the pens - even if they did, they only contain a little water.

At £21.99 I think this is a bargain.

Fisher-Price TRIO Airplane Set £5.99

This is a wonderful toy and, at only £5.99, great value for money. You get plenty of coloured plastic pieces, different sized blocks and connectors. You have everything you need to make any number of different planes. My boys made planes and robots out of theirs. Other sets are available.

Fisher-Price TRIO is really well made and it fits together beautifully. It's played with regularly (my test of a toy's real value).  I can't fault it.

Pop Goes Froggio Game £11.97, from £14.97

My boys really liked this game. In our version, you take it in turns to stamp on the foot pump and make Froggio shoot up in the air. You can try to catch him or hope he lands on a lilypad. If so, you win a lilypad.

I say 'in our version' because I found the actual rules overly complicated. They involve animals on the reverse of the lilypad cards and a spinner and I thought this element was unnecessary and slowed the game down. After all, what you really want to do is stamp on the pump and watch the rubber Froggio hit the ceiling! Older children may appreciate more of a challenge, but for my two it was enough to get Froggio to move.

Pop Goes Froggio is energetic and a lot of fun.

Ravensburger Jolly Octopus Game £11.99, from £16.99

In this game you have to retrieve coloured crabs with the tongs provided while the jolly octopus spins round waggling its arms. On each person's turn they press down Jolly's head and listen to a harp while he gets up to speed. Once the music stops you have to grab a crab.

My three year old, Presley, worked out that he could get any crab he wanted just by holding one of Jolly's arms. When you do this Jolly laughs, as if he is being tickled and stops moving. Clever Presley. He also 'helped' me on my turn. by stopping Jolly for me.

I like this game, it reminds me of the games of skill we played when I was young, like Operation. My husband likes it because he thinks Jolly looks jolly inebriated and the boys ask to play it a lot. It's well made and good fun.

and finally...

I'll start my saying that my children enjoyed this toy, but having said that, they like painting - full stop.

As you hold the brush over the clear gel in the paint pots it lights up to show you the colour you will be painting with. As the gel reacts to the paper it develops into that colour. So far, so clever.

But... you're supposed to clean the brush between colours. My two weren't interested in that, so a lot of the pictures are a bit muddy looking. They just couldn't see that the brush was dirty. It took a long time for the colour to develop on the paper so you couldn't instantly see what you're painting. My two used too much gel trying to see the colour on the paper. The gel was messy and took hours to dry. In fact Cash, my two year old, came running into the room where we were drying the artwork and came to a standstill with one foot in the middle of one painting and another foot in the middle of another. He was stuck, like he was on fly paper and after walking around with paper on his feet for a few steps started to cry. We started to cry with laughter - it was comical!

I'd imagine that an older child would see the magic of this toy and be more sparing with the paint, but we only got two hours use from use from this toy - that's how long it took to use up all of the gel. Give me real paint any day.

Crazy Chefs Game

The Crazy Chefs Game is another wonderful board game from Orchard Toys. It has taken over from Old MacDonald Lotto as our favourite game.

Each child has a chef board and has to collect 7 ingredients, a plate and the finished meal. I say 'each child', but there are 5 boards, so Presley's Monkey usually makes the kebabs, Presley makes 'noogles' (noodles) and cup cakes, Cash makes shepherd's pie and his Big Teddy makes pizza! We don't follow the rules to the letter, but we're happy with our slightly simplified version of the game. Older children would be able to follow the rules of course.

This game is well made, great fun and educational too. The boys can now recite the ingredients they need to make their various meals. When I'm cooking their tea they ask what the ingredients are, they now understand cooking a lot better than before.

We love this game and play it every day!

The Crazy Chefs Game is available from Toys R Us for £6.99.

Moon Sand Demolition Set

The Moon Sand Demolition Set includes a construction figure, digger, sand box and two colours of moon sand. Using the inter-changable scoop as a brick-maker you can build walls and demolish them repeatedly with the wrecking ball.

Moon Sand is wonderful stuff. It doesn't dry out, so it can be used over and over again. But. There had to be a but! It's still sand. In your house. Yes, it vacuums up, but as the sand box is open at the middle this means the sand isn't contained during play.

At 3 and 2, my boys are little young for this and made their own entertainment by walking the builder and driving the digger through the sand. I think I'll put it away for next summer, the boys will be older and they can play with it outside!

The Moon Sand Demolition Set is currently available from Toys R Us for £11.99 (was £14.99).

Mega Bloks 2-in-1 Buildable Thomas The Tank Engine

The Mega Bloks 2-in-1 Buildable Thomas The Tank Engine is a lovely toy. I had great fun assembling Thomas - it took me back to my childhood! The instructions are really clear and easy to follow. The Mega Bloks are well made and great to hold and play with.

You can also build a train station with the same 30 pieces, but there were no detailed instructions for this. You have to use your imagination and building skills.

Our boys loved this Thomas. He is a good size and the wheels mean to he can be pushed around with ease. At 3 and 2, they are a little young to follow the building instructions, but if I removed a few pieces they were able to successfully put Thomas back together. The Mega Bloks fit together really well. I know this because my boys delight in taking Thomas to pieces and asking Mummy to put it back together. If there was a time-trial for building this Thomas I would probably win!

This toy is a great introduction to Mega Bloks and a must for any Thomas The Tank Engine fans.

The Mega Bloks 2-in-1 Buildable Thomas The Tank Engine is available from Toys R Us for £24.99.

Fireman Sam Fire Engine Convertible

The Fireman Sam Fire Engine Convertible is two toys in one. It's a robot-like Fireman Sam (see the image above) that converts rather neatly into a fire engine, with Fireman Sam's head poking out the top.

We liked that the conversion was easy to do, but there were a couple of sharp edges to watch out for and the whole toy looked a little cheap.

Our boys played with it for a while - they like anything they can 'brum about' - but they weren't huge fans, however if your child loves Fireman Sam, then this is the stocking filler for them.

The Fireman Sam Fire Engine Convertible is available from Toys R Us for £9.99.

Tomy Aquadoodle Desk

The Tomy Aquadoodle Desk is a lightweight, but stable, foam board desk. The desk top is removable and double sided (one side is orange, the other is green). Like all Aquadoodle products the child draws with a water filled pen. The pen is easy to fill and very difficult to spill!

The child can draw for hours, each pen stroke gently fading as the water dries. This is a wonderful mess-free toy and very popular in our house.

It is a victim of its own success though, both my boys want to play with it at the same time and there is only one pen. If anyone knows where I can buy another pen, please let me know! The other downside is the price. I think £29.99 is a little expensive, although the toy is well made and will last a long time.

The Tomy Aquadoodle Desk is available from Toys R Us for £29.99.

Timmy Time Pop Up Game

The Timmy Time Pop Up Game features the lovable lamb, Timmy, from TV's Timmy Time programme.

Load up Timmy with a collection of items, but watch out! Timmy may pop up and drop the lot. Similar to the games of my youth, Buckaroo and Jaws, this game is one of balance and suspense. It promises so much, but does it deliver?

No, sadly. While my children enjoyed playing with this game, they couldn't play with it as intended. Some of the items are almost impossible to put on. The bib is awkward, the hat needs to be at exactly the right angle and the football requires the steady hand of an adult, even then it falls off. A lot. Sometimes the mechanism holding Timmy down fails and you just can't get him to stay down at all. It's frustrating for the child when this happens as you can only load up Timmy when he is in position. When Timmy does pop up it is an anti-climax. It is too gentle, the items just fall off him. It doesn't make you jump.

With a few refinements this could be a great game, but unfortunately it currently gets the verdict of could do better. We wanted it to be better than it was so we were disappointed. If your child LOVES Timmy though, they may enjoy playing with him anyway.

The Timmy Time Pop Up Game is suitable from age 3 and there is some adult assembly required.

The Timmy Time Pop Up Game is available at Toys R Us for £9.99.

Old MacDonald Lotto

The Old MacDonald Lotto Game is made in England by Orchard Toys.

It is a farmyard lotto game for 2-4 players aged between 2 and 6. Each child (and Mummy) chooses a board, then you match cards to your board. As each card is revealed you make the animal noise or action. The winner is the first one to fill their board and find their farmer.

What we like about this game is that it is well made, brightly coloured and fun. The pictures are clear. The boys have their favourite boards now and can remember which cards they need.

As the boys are only just 3 and 2 we don't strictly follow the rules when we play, but this game has been asked for and played with every day since it arrived.

It's a firm favourite in the Calico household, we love it!

The Old MacDonald Lotto Game is available from Toys R Us for £8.99.
